Maternity care falls under the specialty scope of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OB/GYN), highly specialized on the management throughout pregnancy, all- encompassing the healthcare needs before, during and after childbirth. Care and management throughout a pregnancy is essential for women from regular general health check-ups to pregnancy complication treatment to ensure the health and well- being of both the mother and baby. Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s maternity care, or obstetrics specialty is led by a team of highly-skilled obstetricians, that are licensed in handling fertility treatments, pregnancy healthcare, vaginal and caesarean section births and general postnatal care, along with nurses who are specially trained in neonatal care, midwifery and lactation to provide you and your family with optimum and comprehensive much-needed care.
Within the scope of maternity care, our obstetrician performs the following for the duration of your pregnancy during regular routine check-ups and examination.
Typically, you will meet with our obstetrician about 7-8 weeks after your last menstrual after finding out you are pregnant, with regular appointments moving forward towards your expected delivery date and then up to 6 weeks postpartum to get the proper prenatal and postpartum care. Some prenatal examinations include complete blood count, pap smear, urinalysis, ultrasound, and glucose tolerance test while postpartum care include examining your overall wellbeing, monitoring for postpartum conditions such as bleeding, bowel and bladder function, postpartum depression, and consultation on future pregnancies or to birth control options.
In these appointments, aside from assessing your general wellness, your obstetrician will check for any pregnancy complications and/or health problems that requires action.
That said, through your routine examinations, your pregnancy may also be categorized as a high-risk or low-risk pregnancy. A high-risk pregnancy means that there is a higher chance or possibility for you or your baby to develop health issues before, during or after the delivery, but it does not necessarily mean your journey will be more challenging compared to a low-risk pregnancy. With a high-risk pregnancy, you may require extra medical appointments and more closely-observed management with your obstetrician to keep you and your baby as healthy as possible and ensure any health problems that arise are tended to immediately.
At Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur, our obstetricians are trained to perform surgeries related to pregnancy, labour and delivery as well as treat any pregnancy complications that arise.
