Jom Quit - Quit Smoking Programme

Valuable Tips on Quitting Smoking

Follow these techniques to further improve your changes of quitting:

  • Remember you are doing this for a good reason.
  • Choose a good day to quit. This is your "Quit Day". It should be one without too much stress or social activity.
  • Remove temptation. Destroy all your cigarettes, both at home and at work.
  • Do something you enjoy. Stay busy on your "Quit Day". Keep your hands busy.
  • Take one day at a time. Get plenty of sleep to avoid fatigue. Tell yourself "I won't smoke today".
  • Reconfirm your reasons for quitting. Work out how much money you're saving.
  • What could you buy with it in one year?
  • Start a gentle exercise programme to avoid weigh gain and get fit as well.
  • Learn relaxation techniques.
  • If at first you don't succeed, try again. Successful quitters keep on trying.

Coping with Cravings

While medications, such as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and Champix, can help you beat the cravings, there will still be moments when you are tempted. Here are a few ways to help you cope:

  • Do something that requires you to get up and move. Take a walk, for instance.
  • Distract yourself - You may find drinking a glass of water can help.
  • Take control, use your willpower and ask yourself, "How much do I really need this cigarette?"
  • Remind yourself of all the reasons why you stopped smoking.
  • Substitute some regular chewing gum or lolly for a cigarette.
  • Get some exercise which is a great way of dealing with stress and getting fitter too.
  • Talk it through with someone you trust.
  • Think of yourself as a non-smoker not a deprived ex-smoker.
  • If you are interested in quitting smoking, please speak to your doctor or one of our staff. Prince Court Medical Centre has a quit smoking programme that can be tailored to your needs.
